Michiana’s Premiere Classical Ballet School and Home of the Southold Dance Theater Pre Professional Ballet Company

How old does my child have to be to start ballet at Southold Dance Theater?

We welcome students at the age of three, but it’s not a prerequisite to begin in our Creative/Primary program.

How do you determine level placement?

Age range provides our general guideline for initial placement.  Students will be evaluated at 10 years or older to determine their class level if they are just starting ballet, or transferring from another ballet school.  Students are expected to spend at least one year (two 17-week sessions), and often spend two or more years at a particular level before moving to the next level.

How do I register for classes?

The easiest way to register is online through our website. Alternatively, you may register by submitting a registration form in person or by mail. (Please do not mail cash.) Class size is limited. All registrations are processed in the order they are received.

How much do classes cost?

Prices vary depending on the number of classes taken per week.  Pricing is based on the class instruction time. Please check with the Southold office for specific pricing.

Tuition for Creative, Primary, and Ballet I is based on a 15 week dance session. Ballet II-VII is based on 2 15 week sessions.

How do I pay for my tuition?

Payments can be made online or in the Southold office by Visa, Master Card or Discover, Check or Cash. Credit Card payments by phone are also accepted.

Are there any other expenses not indicated on the Class Price list?

In addition to tuition, you must purchase the appropriate dance attire for your child’s class level. There will be additional fees if your child participates in The Nutcracker, our Summer Intensive program, or Spring performances.

Is there a family discount?

Yes. If there is more than one dancer in your family, we offer a reduced rate for the second registration. Please call 574-233-9841 for details.

Can I just bring my child to a class occasionally?

No, students are required to join the school on a per session basis.  We offer a Fall & Spring semester  as well as a Summer Intensive program.

Are parents allowed to watch the class?

Parents may attend class during our predetermined Observation Weeks, or with special permission from the teacher. For young children (under 7 years old), parents are expected to accompany their child to the studio classroom, and wait in the lounge area until class is finished.

What happens if my daughter or son misses a class?

Dancers are allowed to take a make-up class in the case of illness or injury.   Make ups must be completed within the same semester at the student’s level or level immediately below.  No refund or credit is given for missed classes.  A credit toward the next semester will only be issued in the case of extreme illness or injury which prevents the student from returning to class during the same semester.

Are there requirements for dancewear?

Yes.  The School of SDT maintains a dress code to encourage improved concentration.  The dress code further enables muscles and physique to be seen clearly, and defines and continues the lines of the body.

All uniforms should be kept clean and neat. Holes and frayed edges must be mended. Dance and Pointe shoes should never be worn outside the building. Warmers may not be worn during class. Watches, jewelry and safety pins should not be worn in the studio. A female student’s hair should be confined in a bun so that it is immobile, does not distract the audience, hit other dancers or impede turns.

Students who are not properly attired will be required to leave class so they may change into appropriate dance clothing.
