Michiana’s Premiere Classical Ballet School and Home of the Southold Dance Theater Pre Professional Ballet Company

13814485_10154447129232932_1206555407_nCalin Radulescu is originally from Bucharest, Romania. There, he began training at the age of ten, joining the Romanian National Ballet School, part of the George Enescu School of the Arts. Over the next nine years of intensive training with several teachers, including his mother Elena Radulescu, he acquired excellent technique and knowledge of the performing art. At the age of fourteen he became part of a pre-professional ensemble with which he toured the USA, France and Italy. At the age of sixteen he became an apprentice with the Romanian National Ballet. At the age of eighteen he joined the company, and was raised to the rank of principal dancer two years later. He toured with the company all over the world, performing in Switzerland, Germany, South Korea, Italy, Greece, France, Turkey, Bulgaria and Luxembourg. In 1998 he traveled to Germany, dancing for Pfaltz Theater Kaiserslautern. In 1999 he was invited to join Cincinnati Ballet, then in 2001 he accepted a position with Tulsa Ballet.

In 2002, Mr. Radulescu called Grand Rapids his home. There he performed and taught for the Grand Rapids Ballet, completing ten years of his professional career. During this time he performed the principal roles in Swan Lake, Giselle, The Nutcracker, La fille mal gardee, Don Quijote, Les Sylphides, Le Corsaire, Carmen, Paquita, Romeo and Juliet, Anna Karenina, Coppelia, Belling the Slayer, and Scheherazade. From 2004, Calin had the pleasure to become an Affiliate Professor of Dance and Ballet Master at Grand Valley State University, where he started his career as a choreographer and created a few successful ballets, such as: “Carmen”, “Tango Ballet”, “The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night”, “Later On”, “Reflection”.

During his tenure at Grand Valley State University, he became the founder and Associate Artistic Director for the Great Lakes Youth Ballet Company, choreographing numerous classical and contemporary works like “The Nutcracker” and “Coppelia”. Calin has also taught at numerous schools and summer intensive programs during this period. He was commissioned to create new ballets for The Moving Company, such as “Snow White” and “The Present” a world premier, written and choreographed by Calin. After 15 years in the United States, he returned to his home country of Romania to work once more for the Romanian National Ballet, this time as the Assistant Artistic Director and Principal Ballet Master under Johan Kobborg. He also returned to dancing and performed the role of Vronsky, in the ballet “Anna Karenina”, Sir F. Ashton’s “Rhapsody”and Widow Simon in “La fill mal gardee”, The husband in the ballet “Women” by internationally renowned Romanian Choreographer  Gheorghe Iancu. He also had the chance to work first hand with Alina Cojocaru, Ethan Stiefel, Xander Perish, Osiel Gouneo and many others.

Along the way, Calin also had the opportunity to work with world renown artists like Kirk Peterson, Victoria Morgan, Marcello Angelini, Anthony Randazzo, Elyse Borne, Frederick Franklin, Anna Marie Holmes, Stanton Welch, Erica Fischbach, Patricia Barker, Anna Liceica, Val Caniporoli, Charles Askegard, Diane Van Schoor among others.

Today, Calin is very excited to be part of Southold Dance Theater as its Artistic Director and happy to be sharing this experience with his wife Fiona and calling South Bend their new home.
